Start the first row half a spacing in from the wall. The coverage angle is on the speaker's spec sheet, usually listed at 2 kHz.

How this is worked out

Each speaker covers a circle at ear height. Its radius is the distance from ceiling to ear times the tangent of half the coverage angle.

Edge-to-edge spacing uses the fewest speakers and suits background music. Minimum overlap suits speech. Full overlap gives the most even level for conferencing and paging.

Common questions

How many ceiling speakers do I need?

It depends on the ceiling height and the speaker's coverage angle. With a 9-foot ceiling and seated listeners, a 110-degree speaker covers a circle about 14 feet across at ear height. A 24 by 16 foot room then needs 6 speakers for clear speech.

How far apart should ceiling speakers be?

For background music, space them one coverage circle apart. For speech, space them at about 0.7 of that distance so the circles overlap. For conferencing and paging, space them half a circle apart for the most even level.

Do higher ceilings need more speakers?

Fewer, in fact. A higher ceiling spreads each speaker over a wider circle, but each one has to play louder to reach the listeners. Above about 15 feet, pendant or wall-mounted speakers aimed at the seats usually work better than ceiling speakers.
