How big is this video wall, and how close can people stand?

Resolution, overall size and closest viewing distance for LED and LCD walls.

16 ft 11 in and beyond

That is between 1080p and 4K wide. A 1080p source fills it; 4K content will be scaled down.

How this is worked out

For direct-view LED, resolution is wall size divided by pixel pitch. Viewers closer than about one meter per millimeter of pitch will see individual pixels.

For LCD walls, overall size and resolution are the panel dimensions multiplied by the grid.

Common questions

What pixel pitch do I need for an LED wall?

A simple rule: the closest viewer, in meters, should be no nearer than the pixel pitch in millimeters. If people will stand 5 feet away, about 1.5 meters, choose 1.5 mm or finer. If the nearest seat is 15 feet away, a pitch around 4 mm is fine.

How do I work out the resolution of an LED wall?

Divide the wall's width and height by the pixel pitch. A wall 12 feet wide is 3,658 mm, so at 1.5 mm pitch it is about 2,438 pixels across.

Should I choose an LED or LCD video wall?

LCD walls cost less and are sharp up close, but they show thin seams between panels and come in fixed panel sizes. Direct-view LED is seamless, brighter and can be built to any size, at a higher price.
